Correctional Institute Design

Design a Correctional Institution that is not in violation of the United States Constitution. Designs and demonstrative items may not be used for more than one year of competition. The Correctional Institute Design competition is designed to expose the student to the field of corrections. The competition will provide the student with opportunities to learn about the prison system and the rules and regulations that go into designing and operating a correctional facility.

Dress Code

Competitors shall be dressed in Business Professional attire as defined in the TPSA Dress Code Policy.

Materials

  • Photo Identification qt. 1

  • tri-fold presentation board with all required criteria displayed 
  • physical 3D model of a cell within the prison qt. 1
  • 2-pocket folder with brads containing photographs of the group carrying out each phase of the design process qt. 1

Policies

  • Competitors in this event must be active members of the Texas Public Safety Association and in good standing with the Texas Public Safety Association.
  • Competitors must be familiar with and adhere to the Texas Public Safety Association Bylaws and Code of Conduct.
  • Plagiarism, copyright violation and falsification of information are prohibited. Any attempt to gain an unfair advantage will not be tolerated. Violation of the code of conduct or bylaws will result in disqualification and revocation of Texas Public Safety Association membership.
  • Violation of the ethics rules will result in disqualification and revocation of Texas Public Safety Association membership.
  • This event shall be conducted with time restrictions; Instructions: 2 minutes Student Presentations: 10 minutes Judge Questions: 5 minutes Total Event Time: 17 minutes

Procedures

  1. Competitor(s)/Team(s) will report to their respective event when called for or at a set reporting time.
  2. Competitor(s)/Team(s) must check in with event management upon arrival and present photo identification for verification.
  3. Competitor(s)/Team(s) will be directed (by room moderator) into the event room, and to a presentation station.
  4. The room moderator will provide instructions to the team.
  5. The competitor will display all required items on the presentation station, visible to the room moderator and judge. (The room moderator will verify that each team has the required demonstrative items (Tri-Fold, 3D model, 2 pocket folder). Competitors who fail to bring the appropriate items will receive a disqualification and be asked to leave the competition room.)
  6. The room moderator will set a timer for 10 minutes.
  7. When the moderator starts the timer and calls “start”, each team will:
    1. Present their Correctional Institution tri-fold and 3D model to the judge.
  8. The moderator will call “time” when the 10 minute timer sounds.
  9. The judge will be provided 5 minutes to ask clarifying questions.
  10. Upon completion of questioning the competitors will exit the event room.
    1. Competitors will leave their tri-fold board, 3D model, and 2 pocket folder in the event room for review by the judge. .
